  • "Mr. Monk and the Candidate" (Monday, July 12, 2002 -  2 hour pilot)
Tony Shalhoub's tremulous charm as an obsessive-compulsive sleuth highlights the wry premiere of this offbeat mystery series. Ex-cop Adrian Monk harbors abnormal fears of heights, crowds, germs...you name it. With reluctant sidekick (and full-time nurse) Sharona Fleming in tow, he acts as a consultant, using his brilliant deductive skills to help the police while annoying those around him — especially his blustering former boss, Capt. Stottlemeyer — with his odd behavior. In the opener, Stottlemeyer taps Monk's talents to solve the murder of a politician's bodyguard.  Buy "Monk - The Premiere Episode" at Amazon.com.

Monk probes the bizarre circumstances behind a tycoon's death in this clever episode. What prompted software magnate Sidney Teal (J.C. MacKenzie) to turn mugger? Why did a policeman (Jonathan Rannells) flee from the scene when Teal was gunned down by his prey? These questions stump Monk as he investigates Archie Modine (Peter Onorati), the ex-cop whose bullet cut short Teal's odd criminal career. Meanwhile, Sharona threatens to cut short her own career with Monk, after her paycheck bounces because of his reluctance to pressure clients for fees. "I know money doesn't matter on planet Monk," she gripes, "but I'm a single parent."

  • "Mr. Monk and the Airplane" (Friday, October 18, 2002)
The quirky detective series offers a bouncy episode in which Monk confronts a murderous couple on an airplane. Believing that he and Sharona are merely going to the airport to fetch her aunt from New Jersey, Monk is stunned when Sharona says she's actually the one making the flight. Facing a week without his nurse, Monk reluctantly tags along. He spends his air time in typical Monk fashion, irking passengers and crew with obsessive behavior while monitoring a cagey Frenchman whose wife was replaced by a taller look-alike before takeoff. Shalhoub's real-life wife, Brooke Adams, plays a put-upon stewardess.
